Creative Arts in Public and Private Schools (CAPS) Program

These will be some of the groups offered to principals and school staff in the CAPS Guidebook:
  • Art therapy groups for children in the Exceptional Children’s Program
  • Art Therapy for Bereavement and Loss
  • Art Therapy In-Service for Art Teachers
  • Art Therapy Groups for Children from newly immigrated families
  • Fostering early childhood development through creative art

Art Therapy in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools

We provide art therapy services to students through the Exceptional Needs Program in the Chapel Hill/Carrboro City school system and currently serve students in 12 schools. We see most students in small groups, and hope to provide positive experiences for them by challenging them with new sensory experiences, increasing their ability to communicate in a group atmosphere, and providing opportunities to gain a sense of mastery through the process of art-making. We also receive referrals from ESL staff to provide art therapy to students new to this country. Art therapy helps these students with homesickness and acculturation issues, offering the shared language of art expression.
