We provide art therapy services to students in system-level classes through the Exceptional Needs Program in the Chapel Hill/Carrboro City schools. Students are generally seen in small groups, and our goal is to provide positive experiences for them by challenging them with new sensory experiences, increasing their ability to communicate in a group atmosphere, providing opportunities to gain a sense of mastery and flexibility through the process of artmaking, helping them identify and respond to different emotions, and giving voice to their inner selves through the art. The students are encouraged to be playful, curious, and tenacious in their artistic process, and the process itself is emphasized over the end product in our work with them.
